World Plumbing Day is this Friday, March 11th.  It is celebrated each year on this day to bring awareness to the importance of plumbing, as well as the role of plumber, public health, and clean water. Plumbing improves the world, and there are many people who still don’t have access to it today.

Plumbing Improves the World

We celebrate World Plumbing Day, because there isn’t much we do throughout the day that doesn’t involve plumbing. From the moment we wake up in the morning, we either use the toilet, wash our hands, brush our teeth, take a shower, or grab a glass of water. Then as the day goes on we’re using it all day long. We use to cook, to clean clothes and dishes. Our hot water heater uses it to operate our appliances. We even need water to use our air conditioners, who knew? All of these little things we don’t think about as we go about our daily lives are possible thanks to the many plumbers that often go unrecognized.

Plumbing is improving the world. Here are some fast facts over the past few years.

Water Supply

  • Between 2000 and 2015 there were over 1 billion people who gained access to piped water

Sanitation

  • The use of people who were able to use sanitized water increased from only 28% in the year 2000 to 29% in the year 2015
  • Also between those years, the number of people who didn’t have a toilet to use decreased from 1229 million to 892 million.

Improvements in Efficiency

  • The dual flush system which was created in Australia now enables toilets to only use 4.5 liters of water per flush
  • And a 4 minute shower can use as little as 24 liters of water

Still needing improvement

  • Worldwide there are 900 million school children with no hand washing access
  • 361,000 children die each year due to water borne diseases
  • 6 out of 10 people do not have safely managed sanitation
  • 3 out of 10 people worldwide don’t have safe water in their homes

By spreading the word, and raising awareness, we can help get these numbers improved, and help to get plumbing available to everyone. Contact McDonough Plumbing for all of your plumbing needs.
