Many times as homeowners we have the mindset of if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. Unfortunately that can’t be done with our plumbing systems. Sometimes there could be something scary hiding in your pipes that you don’t even know about. And if that’s true, it’s an accident, or leak in our case waiting to happen.
If you get that awful smell of a sewer coming from your drain pipes, there could be two possible causes. One being that the drain trap in the sink is empty, so just turn the water on to fill it up. But if there’s a crack in the vent line going to the roof, you’ll need to call a professional plumber as soon as possible.
If you turn the water on and the water is cloudy, or even worse, rusty colored the pipes could be corroding. At the first sign of any discoloration (that isn’t coming from the city turning off the water and doing work) call your plumber and have them come inspect the pipes to be sure there isn’t an issue with the plumbing system in your home.
Slow drains are never any fun. A simple clog can be cleared with some baking soda and hot water, or a snake depending on where the clog is. But if the clog keeps happening, there could be a bigger issue at hand. You might need professional hydro jetting done to clear the pipes, actually scour the inside before a leak happens.
If you notice paint peeling or cracking around the sink in the bathroom or kitchen, it’s probably due to a leak behind the wall, it isn’t just peeling paint. Contact a professional plumber for a check, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
