Your home should be your refuge. You know, the place you come home from after a long day at work. A trip to the bathroom shower to relax shouldn’t be interrupted by a foul smell coming from your shower drain. That would totally ruin the relaxation factor! A foul smell coming from your drain can happen to anyone at any time. Thankfully there are things we can to do fix and prevent them here at McDonough Plumbing in Port Charlotte! Check out these tips for a great smelling shower drain!
Check the Drain Stopper
This one is especially for the ladies. Many showers are equipped with a strainer covering the shower drain, these are designed to catch hair from clogging the drain. They also catch soap scum and any other debris that could fall through. As time passes, the debris accumulates and begins to smell, especially if there’s a big clump of hair sitting in the pipe. It’s a simple fix. Unscrew the cover, and clear it out. A screwdriver works best to scoop it out. Then rinse it with warm water.
Mold or Mildew
If this buildup isn’t what is causing the smell, there could be a mold or mildew issue which is causing the problem. This is a problem here in Florida anyway with our high moisture and humidity. But even more so in pipes, as they’re dark and wet. Finding it growing in shower drains is common. Remove the strainer and clean it well. You’ll also want to be sure that it fits the drain correctly so that water isn’t trapped and allows for mold to grow in the future. If it doesn’t fit properly, be sure to replace it.
