Is your sink or shower draining slowly? Before reaching for harsh chemicals, try these simple methods to get clear drains first.

Clear DrainsPlunger

Often times a simple plunger will do the job. A good trick with a plunger is to run it under hot water first to soften it up. No household should be without one. Just force it down over the opening to create suction and pump it a few times. Most times that’s all the pipe needs to clear the obstruction. After, be sure to rinse the plunger off with hot water!

Drain Snake

If the plunger didn’t take care of the clog, the next step is a drain snake. Drain snakes come in different lengths and diameters depending on what they’re needed for. But all drain snakes use cables that have special ends designed for snagging or cutting the cause of the drain, making them a great option to clear a clog.

Hot water and Vinegar

If the kitchen sink is clogged and you’re suspecting that grease is the culprit, create a mixture of hot water and vinegar to break it up. It might need to be repeated a few times, and a plunger might need to be used as well, but let it sit for a few minutes and it should dissolve the clog that is blocking the pipes.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

To clear your drains using baking soda and vinegar, first start by pouring boiling water down the drain and let it sit for a few minutes. Then mix a cup of vinegar and a cup of very hot water together and pour that on top of the baking soda. Cover the drain and let it sit for about 10 minutes, then pour another pot of boiling water down the drain.

All of these methods are better than chemicals because they don’t damage your pipes or the environment. If you’re still having problems with clogged drains, give the plumbing experts at McDonough Plumbing a call, we’re here for you!
